Frequently Asked Questions

What is PERMADECK?

Polymer and wood fibres are blended to create our decking material. The best composites are those manufactured with the finest wood fibres so that the polymer can protect (encapsulate) each fibre. Composite products combine the best features of both wood and polymer.

Does the environment benefit?

Yes - as the materials used are recycled polymers and recycled wood fibres from wood processing plants.

Does it fade to a tired old colour?

No. PERMADECK does not require painting and staining to keep its colour. While fading only slightly during the first summer laid, it stabilises and remains colour fast thereafter and will not change colour or become tired like wood.

How big is the gap between the deck boards?

Using the clip system the space is automatically set at 5mm.

What is the recommended spanning distance between joists ?

400mm centres for EverX and Architectural and 600mm centres for Marine.

How do I fix it ?

Just like wood, PERMADECK can be sawn, drilled and sanded. BUT it has a unique concealed fastener system so there are no visible screws or nails protruding from the board.

How much will PERMADECK expand or contract?

The standard rate of expansion or contraction for PERMADECK is 1mm per metre from cold to hot (max. of 6mm) through the length. Expansion and contraction through the width and depth is so minimal it will have no noticeable effect.

Where can I use PERMADECK?

Anywhere you would previously have used decking timber (subject to Local Government Regulations and Council approval if required) - such as decks, around pools and spas, marinas and pontoons, boardwalks, school play areas, etc. The waterproof and rot proof properties make it especially ideal for wet areas.

Can this product be used for marinas?

PERMADECK is ideal for applications such as marinas, boardwalks, etc. With the unique hidden fastener system, the decking has the ability to flex and prevents the boards from warping, splitting or tearing away. It is also ideal for around swimming pools and spas.

What is the moisture resistance of PERMADECK?

As PERMADECK is an extruded blend of wood and polymers, the polymer component in the product gives it excellent resistance to the elements, making it far more water resistant than natural timber. However, it should be noted that PERMADECK is not designed to be permanently submerged as this could eventually lead to moisture absorption and could cause the product to swell.

Does PERMADECK need ventilation?

Like timber, providing adequate ventilation will allow PERMADECK to dry out after being wet which will contribute to the longevity of the product in premium condition.

Will it warp?

Most warping in timber is related to moisture absorption. PERMADECK will not warp provided it is used and fixed in line with fixing instructions. The polymer component of PERMADECK is sufficiently stiffened by the wood component to ensure that it will not warp or buckle under the harshest of climatic conditions.

Does it splinter?

NO. This is an ideal surface for bare feet and small children.

How do I fix PERMADECK?

PERMADECK is not fixed using traditional methods. A simple but clever clip system is used to fasten the boards to joists. No nails, pre-drilling or punching is required. Please check our fixing instructions.

Does it mark easily?

No but decking can be marked if care is not taken during installation. With the rolled on finish, if any deep scratches occur, these can be removed by using a clean wire brush. The brush should be used in the same direction as the brushed finish. Badly damaged boards can be replaced, reversed or moved to an area out of view.

What are its weathering characteristics?

PERMADECK is pre-coloured during the manufacturing process with UV stable pigments. During the first couple of month’s exposure to weather, the initial colour of the product will lighten very slightly before stabilising. No painting or staining is ever required.

How does PERMADECK compare with timber in terms of surface temperature?

Tests have shown PERMADECK has a similar surface temperature to timber of similar colours and finishes.

Is it UV Protected?

Yes. The combination of the wood and colour pigmentation in the recycled plastic ensure that PERMADECK decking products have very a high degree of UV stability.

Can PERMADECK be used for joists?

No. However, although PERMADECK products have excellent durability, they are not designed to be used for structural framing.

Can PERMADECK be installed on both timber and metal framing?

Yes! The clip fastener is designed to be used on both systems but the screw for the metal is a self-tapper. Please always specify to your supplier whether you are using timber or metal framing. The only limitation with metal framing is that composite decking and metal will expand and contract at different rates and for this reason PERMADECK must NOT be fixed directly to metal framing.

Does it burn?

PERMADECK is less combustible than timber but will burn so should not be exposed to direct flame.

Is it termite resistant?

Yes.

Is PERMADECK slippery?

No! It has a textured surface and is very good for use around wet areas such as spas, pools, ramps & marinas etc.

Is PERMADECK suitable for use around swimming pools?

Yes definitely, however, we do recommend any area that gets wet be ventilated.

Can PERMADECK be used by the sea?

PERMADECK is ideal in a marine environment, being unaffected by salt air.

How can I clean and maintain PERMADECK?

PERMADECK is relatively maintenance free. Sweeping and cleaning with normal household cleaners is generally all that is required. If organic matter builds up on the deck removing it and then washing down using a mild solution of warm water and bleach 30 Seconds Spray & Walk Away will restore it beautifully.

Should I paint or stain my PERMADECK?

No. Staining or painting is not recommended.

Is PERMADECK mould resistant?

Yes. PERMADECK is mould resistant, however without sufficient ventilation or in areas where organic debris can collect and does not get washed off, mould may appear. Mould and mildew may grow on the deck surface in some circumstances, especially in damp shaded areas, or if in high humidity before installation. Failure to keep packs dry in storage can lead to the growth of mould spores on boards. Clean as per directions under Care and Maintenance.

Are there special tools required for working with PERMADECK?

No. With PERMADECK you can use standard woodworking tools. Being a durable product it will wear blades faster than wood. As with using any power tools, safety glasses and face masks should be used when cutting or drilling PERMADECK. The PERMADECK sawdust is coarser than wood and that doesn’t tend to float in the air. This makes it safer for working.

How should PERMADECK be stored and handled?

Whether at the timber merchant’s premises or at your own property awaiting installation, PERMADECK should be stored in a dry, flat area under cover. Failure to keep packs dry in storage can lead to the growth of mould spores on boards. When moving product around, PERMADECK should be supported though its length and preferably carried on its edge.

Is PERMADECK guaranteed?

Yes, for 15 to 25 years in most cases. Please refer to the warranty section for information. All product performance claims are based on PERMADECK products being used as recommended and installed in accordance with PERMADECK fixing specifications.
